A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 has struck near Ridgecrest, California, causing widespread damage and multiple fatalities. The quake, which occurred at 10:33 a.m. local time, was felt across Southern California and as far north as San Francisco.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake was located approximately 12 miles (19 kilometers) northeast of Ridgecrest, a small city in Kern County. The quake was followed by a series of aftershocks, the largest of which was a magnitude 5.4.
Emergency responders are currently on the scene, and damage assessments are underway. It is too early to determine the full extent of the damage, but reports indicate that multiple buildings have collapsed and roads have been buckled. There are also reports of gas leaks and power outages.
